Feeding Houston: Brighter Bites, Houston Food Bank and Cougar Cupboard

We cover a number of gourmet restaurants, booming burger joints and primo pizza parlors here in the Houston Press. And as much as we enjoy scouting out new cafes and happy hour hotspots, we also realize that a large number of Houstonians not only lack the means to dine out but also face hunger within their homes as well.

We are a massively spread out city and arguably the most diverse in the nation. And meeting the needs of those facing food insecurity is a daunting task. One organization alone cannot serve all of Houston’s families and residents in need. Houston Food Bank, the nation’s largest food bank network, serves 18 southeast Texas counties. That’s a lot of people to feed.

There are other organizations, however, that also have arisen in the past few years to provide more than just boxes of non-perishable foods, but also fresh produce and education. Working together, these non-profits benefit those in need of food and healthy habits. And some of them have experienced some big boosts lately in their efforts to do so.

Brighter Bites

Recently, we were invited to the Brighter Bites Second Anniversary Gala to meet with some of its organizers and strategists, folks who aim to not only provide school children with fresh produce but also educate families about the preservation and cooking of the precious ingredients.

Brighter Bites, which began in 2012, is the brainchild of founder and board chair Lisa Helfman and co-founder Dr. Shreela Sharma. Helfman attributes her inspiration for the non-profit to her decision years ago to take part in a weekly fruit and vegetable co-op to provide fresh produce for her family. One day her 6-year-old son, now a young man seated in the audience, turned down a slice of cake at a party because it was too sweet and asked instead for some berries. Helfman says she realized then that exposing children to healthy foods could make a difference but that not all children have access to fresh produce.

She began a collaboration with Dr. Sharma, a nutrition expert and professor of epidemiology at UTHealth School of Public Health. They started with local schools, providing fruits and vegetables donated by produce partners. Some students did not even recognize the different berries, citrus and greens.

Press Release: Brighter Bites Receives 2019 Seeds of Hope Award

HOUSTON, TX (NOVEMBER 25, 2019) – Last week, Brighter Bites, the Houston-based nonprofit that provides families and teachers in underserved communities with fresh fruits and vegetables and nutrition education, received the RESULTS Houston Seeds of Hope Award, bestowed annually to an honoree who is making a meaningful impact in the work to end poverty.

Brighter Bites provides free fresh produce in underserved communities around the U.S. with the goal of changing behavior among children and their families to prevent obesity and achieve long-term health. Brighter Bites Co-founders Lisa Helfman and Dr. Shreela Sharma started the organization in Houston in 2012, providing fourth grade families at one elementary school with fresh produce, nutrition education, and a fun food experience when they picked up their produce each week. Since then, Brighter Bites has provided more than 24 million pounds of fresh produce and 100,000s of nutrition education materials to more than 50,000 families in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area, and Southwest Florida.

“Brighter Bites is mission aligned with RESULTS in that we are all trying to empower families in need by planting ‘seeds of hope’ to improve their health and lives,” said Shreela Sharma, PhD, co-founder of Brighter Bites and professor of epidemiology at UTHealth School of Public Health. “We are greatly humbled and honored to receive this award.”

The Houston chapter of RESULTS, a non-partisan advocacy group that supports a movement of passionate, committed volunteers who use their voices to influence political decisions that will end poverty, typically gathers 150 people from the Houston area to attend a fundraising dinner the chapter has been hosting for close to 20 years. In past years, the featured speakers have included a range of individuals working to end poverty including Professor Muhammad Yunus. The 2019 speaker was William Moore, the executive director of the Eleanor Crook Foundation, which works on global nutrition.

“We are thrilled and grateful to receive this honor,” said Brighter Bites CEO Rich Dachman. “This prestigious award will further motivate us to continue to dedicate ourselves to getting produce into the homes of families who need it, teaching them how to use it, and helping improve their eating habits so they can lead healthier lives.”

Dr. Sharma and Mr. Dachman received the award on behalf of Brighter Bites at the gala on Friday, November 22 in Houston.

“Our ability to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to our families is completely dependent on the support of our partners,” said Brighter Bites CEO Rich Dachman. “The generous donations of produce from these partners and other suppliers, alongside our extraordinary partnerships with our food banks, allows us to achieve our mission of improving the health of our society, especially those who have fewer resources. I believe our industry has a responsibility to utilize its produce to fight the childhood obesity epidemic and improve health outcomes. I challenge all in the industry to get involved. Brighter Bites is a great place to start so we can scale our program to reach even more communities in need of fresh food and better health.”

Partner Highlight: Southern Specialties

Our friends at Southern Specialties,  a South Florida fruit and vegetable grower and shipper, have partnered with Brighter Bites to provide two varieties of produce each week to our Southwest Florida program. We are so excited about this partnership and all the wonderful produce varieties that our families will be introduced to.

“Southern Specialties is very proud of our association with Brighter Bites. Together, we are moving the needle towards greater fruit and vegetable consumption among children and their families,” said Charlie Eagle, vice president of business development for Southern Specialties. “It is gratifying to see the quantifiable results produced by the Brighter Bites program.”

“With consistent support from Southern Specialties each week of our programming in Southwest Florida, we are sure to be giving our families in Immokalee and other parts of Collier County access to two additional unique items of produce each and every week of the program,” said Brighter Bites Executive Director Samuel Newman. “During this season of gratitude, we are thankful for produce houses like Southern Specialties who understand that exposing Brighter Bites families to fresh food is giving them the gift of health.”

Letters from Students Brighten the Day

At Brighter Bites, we love seeing students get excited about green beans, kiwis, and other fresh fruits and vegetables. It lets us know we are successfully creating communities of health through fresh food! If you’ve never been to a Brighter Bites distribution in person to experience how fun produce can be, we invite you to read through a few letters that Brighter Bites received from students in our Austin and NYC programs. They’re guaranteed to brighten your day!

Kids Taste Test Brighter Bites Recipes

Brighter Bites had a fantastic spring programming season, and we’re so excited to soon begin summer programming in community centers nationwide! Before school let out for summer, however we headed back to campus one last time to invite Brighter Bites kiddos to taste our recipes.

We work hard to create produce-filled recipes that everyone in the family will love. Since kids tend to be our pickiest eaters, their feedback is essential! Our staff served participating students a variety of prepared Brighter Bites recipes and they left us with their comments and ratings.

Our Houston team did a taste testing at KIPP Dream Elementary School in south Houston, where students tried our Sweet Potato Harvest Salad recipe and gave us feedback via comment cards.

Students at Norman and Odom Elementary Schools in Austin tried recipes such as Turkey Veggie Chili, Razzle Dazzle Rainbow Salsa, and Avocado Cilantro Yogurt Dip.

We had a blast gathering insights from students and incorporating their thoughts and ideas into the recipes we prepare in the future!

Julie Reisler Podcast Features Lisa Helfman

Brighter Bites Founder Lisa Helfman was recently the featured guest on life-coach Julie Reisler‘s podcast “The You-est You.” Julie Reisler is an author, motivational speaker, and life coach who urges her large audience to connect with their authentic selves to find their purpose in life.  Each of her weekly podcasts feature “an empowering interview with a thought leader, entrepreneur, or deeply inspirational human being who will give you a peek inside their journey to finding purpose on the planet and becoming their most authentic selves.”

Lisa and Julie had a great conversation about trusting your gut, following your intuition, and becoming self-aware in order to live your “you-est” life. Lisa described how self-awareness helped her home in on her passion for the power of produce, which led to the creation of Brighter Bites. Lisa also discussed her goal for Brighter Bites to create change in the lives of everyone it serves and her vision for Brighter Bites as a growing movement to change the way people see food — as a source of health rather than just satiation.
