Buona Foods

Located in the heart of Chester County, Pennsylvania—the Mushroom Capital of the World—Buona Foods, Inc. was established on strong family principles. Rosemarie Ferranto, the daughter of Italian immigrants, grew up working on her family’s mushroom farm not far from Buona Foods’ present location. In 1972, Roro, as she is known to friends and family, began supplying local grocers and restaurateurs with mushrooms. Her love of people and her products enabled her business to grow steadily. Three years later, her husband Robert “Bear” Ferranto came on board, bringing 26 years of production management experience, and helped to expand the business in both size and scope. In the years that followed, their three children—Robert, Peter and Gale—also joined the company, each contributing talent and expertise that has helped Buona continue to grow into one of the most prominent mushroom companies in the region.

The Salad Farm

From a very young age, Lex Camany knew he wanted to work in the agricultural industry. After graduating from Chico State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and Pomology, Lex went to work for the Mexican Government, working directly under the Secretary of Agriculture–coordinating all their research projects. After spending two years in Mexico, Lex returned to the Salinas Valley and created the strawberry department at Hartnell College, teaching students how to grow and harvest strawberries.

Joyce Camany grew up on a farm driving tractors and helping her dad grow row crops, move irrigation pipes, and even pulled weeds with her grandmother. Like Lex, Joyce knew she wanted a career in the agricultural industry and for fifteen years worked for the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner as Produce Inspector, inspecting all commodities to insure standards were being met.

In the summer of 2007, The Salad Farm was formed by Lex, Joyce, and a group of long-time, innovative partners—all of whom have been in the produce industry for over twenty years. It’s these collective years of experience, and the combined execution efforts of the entire Salad Farm team, that create the company’s foundation and commitment to quality.

The Salad Farm is a family-owned operation, supplying customers from coast-to-coast with premium spring mix, baby and teen spinach, green, and romaine leaf fillets, arugula, frisee, and radicchio.
