Brighter Bites {Houston} is Back in Action

It’s that time again folks.  We’re excited to be back in action this spring!  We’ve been working on bunches and bushels of projects this winter to make this spring extra tasty.  Our resident wizard in the kitchen, Christina, is writing new recipes so prepare your taste buds for the culinary adventure they are about to take!  We should know.  We’ve been testing them on ourselves.  Would you have guessed that broccoli and grapes taste great together?  You’ll get to sample our snack and find out for yourself. The new and improved parent manual has arrived as well!  On top of being absolutely gorgeous, it’s fun and informative (look under ‘Tips & Tools’ soon to find a copy).  Chapters include Desserts Done Right and Making a Menu!  We want to give you the tools to make healthier decisions.  This includes NEW RECIPES!  Carrot Cake and Smoky Greens are a couple of our favorites.  Oh, and the Watermelon Refresher!  Who doesn’t love a cool beverage in the sweltering Texas summer? Nutrition Education We can’t contain our enthusiasm for what this semester might bring.  It’s a new growing season so we’ll get lots of different fruits and veggies that we didn’t have in the fall.  Broccoli, kale, pineapples, and strawberries are on our wish list! Did we mention that we have added a new school?!  The opportunity to share our message with new Brighter Biters is indescribably motivating. Can’t wait to start!

We’re Hiring Community Health Workers

Trained and Licensed Community Health Workers are needed to help with these distributions on a part-time, contractual basis to assist with Brighter Bites distributions in Houston. Job Details: $15/hour Contract, part-time (up to 20 hrs/week during seasons) Seasonal — Summer: June-July; Fall: September-November; Spring: February-April Must be able to travel independently to school sites around the Houston area (mileage reimbursable) Bilingual (Spanish/English) candidates encouraged to apply! It’s a Wrap in Houston

It’s been a whirlwind!  The Houston operation doubled in size!  We took on more schools than we’ve ever done and served more families than we ever have.  We were able to give them even more variety with new items such as persimmons, rutabaga, and kabocha squash.  We’ve experimented with new recipes and snacks.  And we overhauled our education materials to include more of what you asked for! More recipes, more cooking skills, and more information about keeping your family healthy. 2014 has been a tremendous year of growth for Brighter Bites.  None of which would be possible without the wonderful staff of the Houston Food Bank and North Texas Food Bank who made it their mission to get us more produce.  We love our warehouse staff who took care to build our pallets and our fun-loving drivers who made sure it was delivered. And we can’t forget about our dedicated volunteers who participated every week at each site.  It’s hard work and nobody knows it better than them. Brighter Bites is really a team effort and we’re thankful to have so much support!  Thank you all for another great semester! Brighter Bites Volunteers
