Over here at Brighter Bites we’re celebrating Avocado Week again thanks to the incredible support of Avocados From Mexico (AFM). This week we sent home 5,100 pounds of avocados grown in Mexico to 5,750 families in Houston, Dallas, and Austin, TX.
These families tasted our new avocado-filled Cauliflower Ceviche recipe, took home nutrition education information about avocados (created by AFM and Brighter Bites), and received 2-3 avocados donated by Henry Avocado in Houston and Mission Produce in Austin and Dallas. And thanks to Mann’s for donating cauliflower in Austin and Dallas for those families to make the Cauliflower Ceviche recipe they tasted at pick up. Brighter Bites is grateful to the generosity of these produce industry leaders for joining us in our mission to create communities of health through fresh food.
We’ll have more Avocado Weeks later this semester to ensure all 20,000+ Brighter Bites families in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Southwest Florida receive Mexican-grown avocados too.
DALLAS, TX (February 5, 2020) – Avocados From Mexico (AFM) and Brighter Bites today announced their renewed partnership to bring avocados and nutrition education materials about them to thousands of Brighter Bites families living in underserved communities in Texas, New York, Maryland, and Florida.
Beginning in February, AFM, the No. 1 selling avocado brand in the U.S., is sponsoring fresh deliveries of avocados and nutrition education materials to schools across the nation, supporting more than 18,000 families who participate in Brighter Bites, a nonprofit that provides fresh produce to families and teachers in underserved communities, teaches them how to use it, and tracks their dietary behavior change.
“We are excited to partner with Brighter Bites again this year, providing healthy fruits and vegetables to students across the country for the third consecutive year,” said Alvaro Luque, Avocados From Mexico CEO and President. “We understand the challenges many families face to get proper nutrition, which is why our AFM employees are grateful for the chance to actively participate in making a difference, especially in our local community.”
“Brighter Bites is thrilled to partner again with AFM and the incredible opportunities the relationship provides,” said Brighter Bites CEO Rich Dachman. “Together, we’re able to deliver this delicious, nutrient-dense superfood into the hands of the thousands of families we serve in the U.S.”
The partnership with Brighter Bites is part of the AFM Life company platform that values the heart and care that is committed to preserving the wellbeing of its employees, their families, and the greater, neighboring community. Demonstrating these values, AFM employees are dedicated to getting fresh fruits and vegetables to families in need, providing materials about healthy eating and encouraging kids to realize how much they can enjoy fruits and vegetables.
“Partnering with Brighter Bites allows AFM to fulfill our commitment to doing good, spreading health and wellness in the community, and educating our neighbors on the great benefits of the delicious, always-in-season avocado,” said Stephanie Bazan, Vice President of Trade & Promotion for Avocados From Mexico. “Education is a key pillar for us so we’re excited about the development of our co-branded nutrition education materials for families, offering tips on ripening and healthy recipes the whole family can enjoy along with the donated avocados.”

We’re celebrating all things avocado this week! Thanks to our friends at Avocados From Mexico and Del Monte Fresh, all Brighter Bites families across the country are enjoying avocados in their produce bags!
It’s Avocado Week at Brighter Bites!
Brighter Bites is celebrating its third bi-annual Avocado Week with our friends at Avocados From Mexico and Del Monte Fresh, who generously donated 27,823 avocados to Brighter Bites cities across the nation. All Brighter Bites families are going home with two Hass avocados in their weekly produce bags, along with nutrition education materials, and plenty of recipe inspiration!
Hass avocados are the only avocados in the world that are available 365 days a year. These beauties — which are technically berries! — are packed with nearly 20 vitamins and minerals and are naturally free of sodium and cholesterol. Avocados are also a great source of fiber and unsaturated fat, which means they’ll keep you full for a long time!
Del Monte Fresh made a special effort to donate green avocados to our families to avoid the fruit ripening too fast over the course of the week. Pro tip: next time you’re doing the grocery shopping, look for a firm, green avocado if you want it to use it later in the week. If you need to speed up the ripening process, try placing the avocado in a brown paper bag with a banana for 1-3 days!
Del Monte Fresh’s nationwide network of distribution centers stepped up to make sure Brighter Bites received all of our avocados in time for Avocado Week. Special thanks to Del Monte Dallas, Del Monte Houston, Del Monte Philadelphia, Del Monte Baltimore, and Del Monte Fort Lauderdale for playing an integral part in Avocado Week!
We are so grateful to Avocados From Mexico for generously supporting Avocado Week and to Del Monte Fresh for their generous donation of so much fruit! We love celebrating avocados and look forward to many more avocados weeks to come.
